Multidisciplinary Approach

EFFECTIVE TREATMENT AND OUTCOME

Due to the multifactoral nature of of balance problems, a multidisciplinary patient management team is integral to effective assessment and treatment.  The most effective management strategy is an evidence-based approach focused on impairments, functional limitations and pathology (as modeled in Figure 2.)  The multidisciplinary team works together, sharing common information regarding the contributing factors underlying a patient's balance problem. Diagnostic testing, assessments and treatment planning are managed in a coordinated effort, resulting in better patient outcomes.

Highlights of this model include:

  1. Classification of patients based on pathology, impairments and functional limitations.
  2. A care plan based on accurate patient classification, which includes progress indicators and expected outcome.
  3. Access to surgical, medical and rehabilitation treatments as appropriate.

THE BALANCE CENTER MODEL

The balance center concept implements the multidisciplinary team approach, drawing as needed on specialist from otolaryngology, audiology, neurology, physiatry, physical and occupations therapy.  The team is the core of the balance center, but the center itself can take many forms.

  •   The facility-based center, such as a hospital or medical center
  •   The network-based center, representing a collection of independent services and specialties working together.
  •   The integrated" hub and spoke" center with multiple services and specialties at various locations.

The key to success is a comprehensive and integrated approach to patient management.
